Xeneta Shipping Index by Compass

The Xeneta Shipping Index by Compass or XSI-C is an EU BMR compliant container rates index.

The index serves as an open, free and transparent source of short-term FAK (freight all kind) rates for a standard 40 foot container across 8 global trade corridors.

XSI-C displays daily rates with a 2-day lag. The index levels are calculated and monitored by Compass Financial Technologies and are published every weekday at 4:15 PM London time.

Methodology

The rates offered by the index are based on Xeneta's vast collection of anonymized and aggregated rate data provided by hundreds of shippers and freight forwarders that covers most global ocean freight corridors.

Our data collection and processing are compliant with EU BMR, and our Code of Conduct fully in line with the EU BMR regulations.

Difference with Xeneta platform

The rates displayed by the index differ from the rates shown in the Xeneta platform due to fundamental differences in how they are calculated.

While Xeneta displays average rates for a given date, the index shows the weighted average of median rate values for that date. The indexed rate values will therefore remain unchanged once they have been calculated, but the average rates in Xeneta are often updated as we import more data to the platform.

For more detailed information about the index and how it works, see the complete overview of the XSI-C methodology.

Included charges

Rates provided under XSI-C include all charges typically required to ship a container (fuel, security, etc.), as well as terminal handling charges on certain corridors.

The index does not include any charges associated with dangerous goods, heavy or otherwise special equipment, as well as any pre-carriage or on-carriage charges or fees associated with premium or guaranteed services.

Covered corridors

The index currently provides access to daily average short-term container rates across 8 largest global trade corridors:

  • Far East – North Europe
  • North Europe – Far East
  • Far East – US West Coast
  • US West Coast – Far East
  • Far East – South America East Coast
  • North Europe – US East
  • US East Coast – North Europe
  • North Europe – South America East Coast

Note that the North Europe region does not include UK ports due to significant rate difference. Excluding UK ports allows us to make sure that XSI-C provides the most accurate representation of the market.
