Temperature-controlled cargo
Some types of cargo, such as pharmaceuticals, biologics, and certain food products, are too sensitive to temperature changes and need to be transported in strict temperature-controlled (TC) conditions.
Depending on the sensitivity of the cargo, airlines use two types of packaging to help keep the cargo within a specific temperature range:
- Passive — cargo is kept within the desired temperature range using passive refrigeration materials such as coolants and insulation
- Active — cargo is kept within the desired temperature range using active temperature control and refrigeration systems
The market rates for temperature-sensitive cargo in Xeneta are available under the Passive service level for shipper rates and under the Pharma passive cargo type for airline rates.
Due to a much lower volume of cargo transported using active temperature-controlled packaging, there currently isn't enough data to provide market rates for active temperature controlled cargo. However, Xeneta is constantly monitoring this and will publish market rates as soon as there is sufficient data density.
